Regenerating and Treating Water
Flowforms Virbela® — Bringing Water Back to Life
In natural waterways, water regenerates through movement. Flowforms Virbela® reproduce this process in a compact space, intensifying bacterial activity in both natural and engineered environments through a simple, playful, and low-energy method. They act like a respiratory organ — much like lungs — for the ecosystem being treated.
Certain Flowforms are specifically designed for their oxygenating and regenerative properties. The lemniscate motion created by Flowforms Virbela® can reduce by a factor of nine the linear distance required for water regeneration compared with natural conditions. This technique consumes very little energy — none at all when existing gravity flow is used.
In Addition to Conventional Biological Treatment Systems…
As a complement to phytoremediation systems
Flowforms Virbela® were installed upstream of a phytoremediation setup to study their effects compared to a system without Flowforms. The study revealed that total nitrogen and BOD₅ (Biological Oxygen Demand over 5 days) removal rates improved respectively from 49% to 71% for total nitrogen and from 80.9% to 86.1% for BOD₅ — in just one gravity-fed pass through the Flowform system (Ung et al., 2022).
Flowforms Virbela® can thus complement traditional wastewater treatment systems — lagooning or phytoremediation — positioned before, during, or after the treatment phase.
Greywater trials
After Flowform installation, the following measurements were taken after just 1 hour and 45 minutes:
- Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) dropped from 424 mg/L to under 20 mg/L;
- Fecal coliform count decreased from 3100 cfu/100 ml to 500 cfu/100 ml;
- Dissolved oxygen increased from 0.1 ppm to 3.9 ppm.
Pools and Natural Swimming Ponds
For swimming pools
In chemically regulated pools, adding Flowforms to the filtration system can significantly reduce — by up to half — the amount of chlorine, copper, or other chemical agents required. It is even possible to eliminate synthetic products entirely while maintaining crystal-clear water when natural phytoremediation systems are used. Whether integrated into the pool’s circuit or placed decoratively beside it, a Flowform cascade enhances the space beautifully in every season.
Trial on a 500 m³ pond
The pond measured 30 m in length, 12 m in width, and 1.4 m in depth. A Flowform unit composed of seven bowls was installed and operated continuously. Within 20 days, water clarity improved from 40 cm to complete visibility at the bottom (1.4 m deep). Floating brown algal masses, which initially covered around 40% of the surface, had sunk to the bottom by the fourth day after installation.
